The readings in this module contained several questionable attitudes towards deviant activities. These activities are both either illegal such as the check forger or immoral such as the topless dancers.
When reading the articles concerning the immoral activities one must try to understand is this immoral because of one’s belief or societies belief? The topless dancer article questioned the justifications of whether or not these people viewed this as a degrading employment or an effective means of earning money. Within the article one dancer presents herself as a real estate broker turned dancer. She presented the attitude on how much money she could earn in one night of dancing. She could not raise this money outside in the real estate market. In another case the attitude was well why not get paid for something you do for free. This mentality is a social stigma that is placed on society by the power of money. Some of the interviewees were often very fourth coming about the need to support their family and so forth.
Considering the nature of the club, the cliental obviously does not see this as immoral. Legal question then come into with issues like the dancers being fully clothed or pubic area being properly covered. This area seems to be more relaxed and not enforced as law. Society tends to push the limits of certain standards and disregards others. Pressure of the morals crusader often passes laws that are to say “Bad Law” based. Officers tend to look the other way, while the moral crusaders never investigate the true nature of certain clubs or bars.
In the article written by Edwin Lemert concerning the check forgers and their justifications of their deviance question the illegal side of deviants. Deviants of this caliber are targeting the people who are anonymous and therefore do not feel these people are victims. The true and experienced forgers have been doing their deviant acts for years and have no desire to stop. They do not view their acts as criminal or immoral, but a venture that is time consuming to learn and harder to become an expert. This deviant mind seems to have neither moral consciousness nor any remorse. Society has shown that these criminals if caught get the least minimal sentences possible and restitution.
Immoral and illegal deviant activities are also discussed in the articles concerning tearooms. The deviants acts that men perform inside public restrooms during the peak seasons, makes people wonder what is this about? Men from the business sector down to the garbage collector and all points in between partake in this deviant and illegal activity. Actions of this nature are outside the norm and cannot be justified in any area except the potential affect of getting away with public exposure. The thrill of not getting caught or seen by ones friends, peers and so forth must be a driving force for this sexual activity.
The article concerning meals prostitution is another article that questions morals versus money. Many of the interviewees often play down their role as no big deal. The only thing they worry about is the money and status either they are a street prostitute, bar prostitute or escort service employee. Even in deviant and illegal activities social ranking is important and can make life a little easier or more dangerous.

Several local news articles address the issue of the public deviancy. Many of the local news articles I have read discuss societies perception of adult clubs. Many raids have occurred against a club that has is nation wide.

Had an article about tickets being sold for the play Hamlet. The tickets had a nude male and female embracing each other on the front. This outraged parents because the pictures were considered obscene.

The studies done in this module makes a person wonder, what else is out there in society that is causing or promoting criminal activity? Criminal activity or deviant behavior cannot be limited in definition or by placing it into a category. People who partake in this criminal nature or immoral behavior must have reasons for their actions. Activities such as the sexual nature of the tearooms and prostitution often bring into play or question would these actors be able to obtain from this behavior if certain things in their life changed or in this an adrenaline rush? In regards to prostitution it has been quoted, as the world’s oldest profession in order to stop this what has not been tried that may succeed in stopping these acts. The cliental that prays on these victims is another problem, the negative publicity of arresting Johns and showing their names and faces on TV hasn’t been able to stop these people from participating in this activity.
Mind manipulation is not an answer but it may be an area that should be explored. As certain actors have low or no self-esteem maybe some coping skills may stop people from becoming witling participants of illegal activities. Often times it takes someone to be publicly humiliated to stop others it may take much more than just being arrested. Psychological services may become necessary and possible effective, but it may not work at all. Many theories have tried to justify why things occur but limited studies on stopping the activity.
The demeaning of criminals doesn’t stop this activity by changing the criminals mind justification or drive the prostitutes may also find safer means to earn incomes. These people have pride and do not look for handouts, but as long as the bait is out there they will keep biting. Demoralizing criminal can often create harsher criminal rather that deter this activity.
In the case of tearooms and topless dancers, once again the money is easy it is minimal work and being able to maintain some form of animosity is positive reason to risk one’s being caught.
